{"id":6768,"date":"2019-11-17T18:07:59","date_gmt":"2019-11-17T18:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=6768"},"modified":"2019-12-29T18:09:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-29T18:09:41","slug":"a-bull-moose-circles-scott-hutchinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=6768","title":{"rendered":"A BULL MOOSE CIRCLES &#8211; Scott Hutchinson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bull moose circles at the edge of my lawn and woods.<br \/>\nHis large head tilts oddly, as if he were looking or listening<br \/>\nfor answers as to why the wildness has greyed and grown smaller,<br \/>\nwhy he no longer hungers for green shoots or deep forest paths.<br \/>\nEmaciated, stumbling\u2014I should call a conservation officer<br \/>\nto come destroy this poor animal. Brain worms<br \/>\nhave infected his cerebrospinal functions. I still know<br \/>\nthis much, recognize the symptoms. Though this morning<br \/>\nI awoke confused, baffled as to where I was. A woman\u2019s face<br \/>\nsmiled at the edge of my bed, her head tilted as if<br \/>\nin love, offering me toast and tea. I did not know her.<br \/>\nI remember warm water, finding myself beneath the rain<br \/>\nof a showerhead, a possessive word pressing into my cerebellum<br \/>\nrelating to answers I do not wish to possess. There was a time<br \/>\nwhen I put boots down on the paths leading to wild ponds<br \/>\nand ledges hidden miles away, places of untamed spectacle.<br \/>\nI can no longer see them clearly. The bull moose angrily<br \/>\nstrikes his hooves at the soft ground, looking for the enemy.<br \/>\nIf they come to shoot him he will charge<br \/>\nas best he can, fearless and heart-pumping<br \/>\nto face off with whatever wishes to paralyze<br \/>\nor end his unsteady gait. His muscles<br \/>\nbuckle involuntarily, but he pushes back<br \/>\ninto his circling. I am tired, confused<br \/>\ntoo often, but there\u2019s a trace of me still<br \/>\nthat chooses old paths leading to sanctuaries<br \/>\nof night rest, soft depressions of leaves.<br \/>\nI will take an antique rifle, open and close the door,<br \/>\nadvance upon the bull moose, we will see<br \/>\nwhat final nourishment might offer itself<br \/>\nto the virile fragments that can remember who we are.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nScott Hutchinson&#8217;s work has appeared in The Georgia Review and The Southern Review.
