SPIRITUAL<\/b>
\n 
\nReal estate
\nplants another tombstone\u2014
\n\u201cFor Sale\u201d signs
\n               on every block
\n 
\nLike the rest of the city,
\na lifestyle is under siege
\n               by an urban plague.
\n 
\nThe Village is dying,
\ntaking the slow,
\n               cancerous exit.
\n 
\nBelow my feet,
\napparition vibes
\nfrom artists, writers, singers,
\n               musicians, and dancers.
\n 
\nJohn Coltrane\u2019s \u201cSpiritual\u201d
\nsays prayers
\nfor the living
\n               and the dead.
\n 
\nJazz
\ncelebrates death,
\n               New Orleans style.
\n 
\nIt\u2019s raining
\ncool Lenten drops
\n               on my umbrella.
\n <\/p>\n

\nSPEAK LOW<\/strong>
\n 
\nThe breeze \u201cspeaks low,
\nspeaks loud\u201d
\nof the ocean\u2019s love
\nfor the bay\u2014
\ncools the summer heat
\non my head.
\n 
\nOn the bay\u2014
\na diamond galaxy,
\na sun\u2019s reflection.
\n 
\nNature in love
\nwith herself.
\n 
\nA ship sails
\nunder the bridge\u2014
\nmy mind wanders
\nin the opposite direction,
\nthinks of what was
\nand what should have been.
\n 
\nLove picks her favorites,
\n\u201cplays hard to get.\u201d
\n 
\nTime is old,
\nhides her age,
\nbut young enough
\nto steal my happiness.
\n 
\nThe sun will shine
\non the moon tonight,
\nbut her mood
\nswings in cycles.
\n 
\nI\u2019m not like the moon\u2014
\nmy cycles bleed,
\neggs lost in darkness.
\n 
\nWhat I thought was love,
\nblew out at dusk.
\n 
\nThe tide rises\u2014
\nclockwise jazz
\nbeats on the terrain.
\n 
\nIn my head,
\nI hear Lady Day sing:
\n 
\nLove is a spark,<\/em>
\nlost in the dark too soon,<\/em>
\ntoo soon . . .<\/em>
\n
