{"id":6033,"date":"2019-03-19T14:41:37","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T14:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=6033"},"modified":"2019-03-22T11:31:14","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T11:31:14","slug":"two-poems-anton-yakovlev","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=6033","title":{"rendered":"TWO POEMS &#8211; Anton Yakovlev"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NATURALIZED<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe blinds on your windows have learned to make their own movies<br \/>\nand long outclass your transactions with ocean fleece.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nNaturally predisposed to back flips,<br \/>\nyou\u2019ve become a dehydrated plant wrapped around a mostly-forgotten statue<br \/>\nno one will ever use<br \/>\nuntil rearranged<br \/>\ncontinents admit something<br \/>\nand no one is there to be their tree in the forest.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt\u2019s been years since blood pumped through garden hoses,<br \/>\nbut you still remember every death.<br \/>\nStars forgot how to spy on you,<br \/>\nbut you continue to feel their spying<br \/>\ndue to the same delay that will make them visible<br \/>\neven after their Yorick moments.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nYou want people to play tennis with what you say,<br \/>\nbut an immigrant child in the village frog pond<br \/>\nscreamed for help in his own language and drowned.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nYou wander through the tail days of summer<br \/>\nsearching for pumpkin beer in immigrant stores,<br \/>\nputting ice on your creepy neck<br \/>\nand rye from closed distilleries in your cheeks.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey\u2019ve spurned you by playing you<br \/>\nthe unauthorized director\u2019s cut of your movie<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nuntil you hoped for more allergies.<br \/>\nNow every reed bends lower than the river.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nFake meat arrives in the mail.<br \/>\nThere cannot be any questions.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nEvery car you cry in suggests a joke.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe wooden huts of the people you recall out of so-called nowhere<br \/>\nhop around your front yard on their chicken legs.<br \/>\nThe people will not come out.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nYour Arc de Triomphe fell asleep<br \/>\nand went off the road last night.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>BREAK<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nSunlight looks great on your brush<br \/>\nbut no paint ever sticks to the canvas<br \/>\nand how can you burn a painting until there <em>is<\/em> a painting?<br \/>\nThrow your paint and see it stop in mid-air.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAir rolls in air, polluted with Prince Oblonsky smiles.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThey rolled away your baby grand years ago,<br \/>\nand did you ever believe in hammers?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nYou could write a letter to a lapsed friend, detailing<br \/>\nthat restless cardinal\u2019s rap chorus outside<br \/>\nyour window. You know that could be enough.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nSomething squats in your aorta.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLately you\u2019ve been overcomplicating things<br \/>\nlike love, drowning it in folklore.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBooze feels like ballroom dancing.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nYour doppelganger is a pizza joint<br \/>\nin the township on the other side of the median<br \/>\ncovered with cartoons<br \/>\nfull of ambition<br \/>\nto make miracles you can\u2019t get rid of.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nVisitors write religions on paper planes.<br \/>\nDeath would validate things, but its microphone is broken.<br \/>\nBetter wait for another god to roll by.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAfter all, it\u2019s twenty minutes to your next brain.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6054\" src=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/nn-Anton_Yakovlev-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\">Anton Yakovlev&#8217;s&nbsp;latest chapbook&nbsp;<i>Chronos Dines Alone<\/i>, winner of the James Tate Poetry Prize 2018, was published by SurVision Books. He is also the author of&nbsp;<i><span class=\"gmail-il\">Ordinary<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"gmail-il\">Impalers<\/span><\/i>&nbsp;(Kelsay Books, 2017) and two prior chapbooks.
