Empty and the sand
\nfollows you along Broadway
\nas if some dampness

\nwas left for shoreline
\nmoves the IRT up
\nthen down the way clammers

\nuse their feet to rake
\n–you walk on tracks
\ncareful not to miss
\n
\nwhile the train underneath
\nbreaks open its doors
\nall at once \u2013-no, you don\u2019t jump
\n
\nnothing like that
\n–these shells are the same
\nthe mad feel for
\n
\nthough their sweat takes the place
\nwater grieves into
\nand their mouths are the same
\n
\nlet you yell down
\nand not a mark inside your body
\nto call you by.<\/p>\n

This cup grows nothing
\nand though you add more water
\nit boils away, half
\n
\ntighter and tighter, half
\nwants you to get some sleep
\nhas become your darling
\n
\nfound a home for your lips
\nused to fever, smoke
\nand the slow climbing turn

\nthat stays moist
\nwaits for the rim to cling
