{"id":4591,"date":"2017-01-10T10:53:03","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T10:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=4591"},"modified":"2017-01-10T15:55:24","modified_gmt":"2017-01-10T15:55:24","slug":"digging-into-the-city-poem-marci-calabretta-cancio-bello","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=4591","title":{"rendered":"DIGGING INTO THE CITY &#038; Poem &#8211; Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You ask me why I did not<br \/>\npin a star beside this city<br \/>\nor that, &amp; my maps<br \/>\nare gathered in graphite<br \/>\n&amp; not ink.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPerhaps I did,<br \/>\n&amp; did not care<br \/>\nto rebuild that city<br \/>\njust yet for you.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPerhaps<br \/>\nI wanted to remember<br \/>\na song curling up the vents<br \/>\n&amp; bent over my ear<br \/>\nlike the willow tree outside<br \/>\nrooted deep as basement:<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBrother, or birds, now gone.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhat between this city\u2019s bricks<br \/>\ncounts as mortar, counts as awl?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPerhaps you lift a stone,<br \/>\n&amp; perhaps a snowplow<br \/>\nor chipmunk escapes,<br \/>\ntiny roar scraping asphalt<br \/>\nas it slips away among the lilacs.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPerhaps I lift a bonsai pot<br \/>\nor a hummingbird\u2019s wing,<br \/>\n&amp; perhaps all the names<br \/>\ngathered in my shirt hem<br \/>\nfall in handfuls as I work<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&amp; perhaps I don\u2019t notice<br \/>\nuntil we finish, too late\u2014<br \/>\ndaybreak, hunting<br \/>\nseason:<br \/>\nthe deer come<br \/>\nswift toward this last bit<br \/>\nof rubble, &amp; we are<br \/>\nwearing the wrong colors.<\/p>\n<p>___________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>THRESHOLD<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know your face<br \/>\nbut I recognize you<br \/>\nas a man selling lemons<br \/>\nor limes in the rain,<br \/>\nor I don\u2019t &amp; you are<br \/>\nonly membranes of light<br \/>\nbetween the palm<br \/>\n&amp; its coin or another<br \/>\npalm never pressed<br \/>\nagainst mine.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAre you a woman<br \/>\nwho swallows rain<br \/>\nin the form of crushed ice?<br \/>\nOr a wolf-child<br \/>\nwho sleeps in the garage<br \/>\npooling so fast with exhaust<br \/>\nI can\u2019t hold it all together<br \/>\nwith one breath? &amp; here<br \/>\nbetween you and you,<br \/>\nif I wipe the rain<br \/>\nfrom my eyes, then you are<br \/>\nboth &amp; neither &amp; gone.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLet me step down, I said,<br \/>\nor I didn\u2019t &amp; wouldn\u2019t<br \/>\nstep down into the water<br \/>\nbecause it was everything<br \/>\nmy body isn\u2019t &amp; was<br \/>\nready to engulf my face<br \/>\n&amp; steal its edges away<br \/>\nwith its retreating<br \/>\nimpression of me,<br \/>\nthe version that was<br \/>\njust my face &amp; maybe<br \/>\na bit more or less.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4595\" src=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/nn-headshot-Marci.jpg\" alt=\"nn-headshot-marci\" width=\"152\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/nn-headshot-Marci.jpg 250w, https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/nn-headshot-Marci-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/>Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello is the author of <em>Hour of the Ox<\/em>, which won the 2015 AWP Donald Hall Prize for Poetry (Pittsburgh, 2016), and has received poetry fellowships from Kundiman and the Knight Foundation, among others.
