{"id":4410,"date":"2016-08-14T13:39:48","date_gmt":"2016-08-14T13:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=4410"},"modified":"2016-09-06T12:08:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T12:08:34","slug":"offensive-leonore-hildebrandt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=4410","title":{"rendered":"OFFENSIVE &#8211; Leonore Hildebrandt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Circuits\u2013\u2013&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you wait for hours while the planets move across your darkness<br \/>\na small trigger&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;in these sparse hills, the past is crouching, ready to crack<br \/>\ninto frenzied barking&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you are attached to it, bound like a \u201cyou\u201d to an \u201cI\u201d<br \/>\na dog behind a chain-link fence&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;which renders you unsightly. A poor sleeper<br \/>\nall raised fur and teeth and mean gums&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you swear what-happened-to-you was<br \/>\nmuscular, feisty, and it charges again and again&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;causing you to lash out. And now<br \/>\ndare you look at these mad eyes? \u201cGood dog,\u201d you say &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;you would like to be<br \/>\nmore hopeful, perhaps, less baf\ufb02ed as you try to ease this malady&#8212;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;my lost child?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLeonore Hildebrandt is the author of a letterpress chapbook, <em>The Work at Hand,<\/em> and a full-length collection, <em>The Next Unknown<\/em>. She has published poems and translations in the <em>Cafe Review, the Cimarron Review, Denver Quarterly, Drunken Boat, Harpur Palate, The Fiddlehead, Poetry Daily,<\/em> and <em>Poetry Salzburg Review,<\/em><em> among other journals. Winner of the 2013 Gemini Poetry Contest, she received fellowships from the Elizabeth George Foundation, the Maine Community Foundation, and the Maine Arts Commission. She was nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize. A native of Germany, Hildebrandt lives \u201coff the grid\u201d in Harrington, Maine.
