Here\u2019s this photo<\/p>\n<p>                             Of a 2 million-year-old<\/p>\n<p>                             Jawbone with a few toothy<\/p>\n<p>                             Molars clinging to it.<\/p>\n<p>                             Our common ancestor.<\/p>\n<p>                             It looks like something ashy<\/p>\n<p>                             Pulled out of the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>                             I remember the Leakeys<\/p>\n<p>                             Having found another something<\/p>\n<p>                             One hundred thirty thousand years old<\/p>\n<p>                             In the Olduvai Gorge<\/p>\n<p>                             Fifty years ago, and proclaimed<\/p>\n<p>                             \u201cLucy\u201d our very own<\/p>\n<p>                             Primary Eve.       <\/p>\n<p>                             Two million?<\/p>\n<p>                             We\u2019ve been scrabbling<\/p>\n<p>                             Around this planet<\/p>\n<p>                             For two million years?<\/p>\n<p>                             Grunting and sucking<\/p>\n<p>                             And fucking and feeling pain<\/p>\n<p>                             And still haven\u2019t figured out<\/p>\n<p>                             How to live together in peace?<\/p>\n<p>                             What pre-historic monsters<\/p>\n<p>                             Are we?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sander Zulauf\u2019s new books include: <em>Where Time Goes <\/em>(Dryad, 2014) and <em>Basho in America<\/em> (iUniverse, 2014).  He is editor emeritus of the <em>Journal of New Jersey Poets<\/em>, and in 1999 he was appointed first poet laureate of the Episcopal Church in the Newark Diocese (Northern New Jersey) by Bishop John Shelby Spong.
