{"id":3056,"date":"2015-01-03T09:35:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-03T09:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=3056"},"modified":"2015-07-13T01:45:55","modified_gmt":"2015-07-13T01:45:55","slug":"serendipity-and-wit-donna-barkman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=3056","title":{"rendered":"SERENDIPITY AND WIT &#8212; Donna Barkman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>after An Artist [Begins Her Life\u2019s Work] at 72.<br \/>\nMolly Peacock, subtitle for A Paper Garden<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe happenstance of a few fallen petals, geranium red \u2013<br \/>\nheeded by the keen eye of Mrs. Mary Delany, who then,<br \/>\nwith initiative and acumen, snipped identical paper shapes<br \/>\nof a matching shade, layering them as the flower itself had done.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMagnolia followed, along with lobelia, nodding thistle,<br \/>\ndamask rose, winter cherry, opium poppy, bloodroot,<br \/>\nall stunning in their verisimilitude of contour and hue: saffron,<br \/>\nscarlet, vermilion, cerise, turquoise, ivory, indigo, gold.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Each mosaick she produced \u2013 near one thousand &#8212;<br \/>\nwas botanically correct, leaf-, stem-, and petal-perfect,<br \/>\nfrank in its display of a blossom\u2019s sexuality: pistils<br \/>\nand stamens aroused in 18th century Georgian England.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMay Mrs. Delany\u2019s lucky petals fall again<br \/>\nin metaphoric splendor before my eager eyes<br \/>\nawakening me to spit and fire with sensuality of word<br \/>\nand fearlessness of deed at whatever age I shall begin.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBorn into a family of Oshkosh Wisconsin actors, Donna Barkman started performing in kindergarten. Her solo play, \u201cHand-Me-Downs\u201d was recently produced in NYC and Westchester. Her poetry has been published in Chautauqua, String Poet, Per Contra, Boston Literary Review, Common Ground, Adrienne Rich: a Tribute Anthology, and others. She has enjoyed two arts residencies in Wyoming.
