Behind the war on women
\nWho does not control her own body?
\nA slave.\u00a0 Aging white men addicted
\nto power cannot stand girls and women
\nchoosing for themselves.\u00a0 They dream
\nof bringing back those patriarchal days
\nwhen women in pearls like tiny teeth
\nrustling in taffeta brought platters
\nof Betty Crocker cakes, salads
\nof raisins, carrots and celery
\nin orange Jello to men who barely
\nneeded to acknowledge their labor
\nbecause God willed it so. They want
\nthe others crushed back into their
\nplaces, smiles glued on, costumes
\nintact, ready to serve as the punch-
\nlines of jokes shared over cigars.
\nThose were the days!\u00a0 And nights
\nof subservience only available now
\nif they pay for it. Their anger swells
\nuntil solidified into punitive laws
\nthat will strip women of choice,
\nof their uppity freedoms, of life itself
\nto bring back those glorious father
\nknows best chastity belt years.<\/p>\n

Knopf brought out Piercy\u2019s 18th<\/sup> poetry book THE HUNGER MOON: New & Selected Poems 1980-2010 in paperback.
