\"NN,Lance Johnson is a mixed media artist born and raised in NY. As a young man raised in the Golden Age of Hip Hop, Johnson fell in love with art when he was introduced to the work of a pioneer of the Jazz Era. Romare Bearden is a heavy influence on Johnson\u2019s artwork. \u201cI owe a tremendous debt to the vision of Romare Bearden. I want to serve as an extension of his legacy.\u201d Lance has shown his work in many group shows throughout NYC as well as shows in Boston and Charleston, South Carolina.<\/p>\n

What inspired Lance to become an artist? \u00a0As he says: “When I was 14 years old, my mother showed me a documentary called “I’ll Make Me A world.” It was a brilliant examination of African American arts in America and the incredible collection of artists who I knew nothing about. It was there that I discovered the work of Romare Bearden. I was fascinated by the improvisation of his work and I knew I wanted to create art with that sort of freedom. As a Hip Hop junkie, the grittiness and energy of his work made so much sense to me..As Jazz informs Bearden’s work, Hip Hop informs mine…a natural continuation of the rich legacy. A rich legacy of Dopeness….”<\/p>\n
