Just now the swans
\nare sitting on the frozen lake<\/p>\n

as if nesting.
\nEarlier they had flown in<\/p>\n

like a fleet of jets
\nin military formation<\/p>\n

turning when they reached the cove
\nthen opening their enormous<\/p>\n

white wings, five parachutes
\ngliding onto the ice.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s made them return
\nnorth so soon?<\/p>\n

The covered ground the same
\ncolor as their wings.<\/p>\n

Spread out on the lake\u2019s
\nopaque surface they remain<\/p>\n

motionless
\nfrozen as ice sculptures<\/p>\n

or regal chess pieces
\npoised for their usual move.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a familiar pattern \u2013 like yesterday
\nwhile driving along a customary route<\/p>\n

I ended up somewhere
\nI hadn\u2019t meant to go.<\/p>\n
