{"id":2596,"date":"2015-01-05T00:26:25","date_gmt":"2015-01-05T00:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2015-01-06T17:52:31","modified_gmt":"2015-01-06T17:52:31","slug":"before-you-kwame-dawes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=2596","title":{"rendered":"BEFORE YOU &#8211; Kwame Dawes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we were country, lived in shotgun<br \/>\nshacks, where the road loses its way<br \/>\nto dirt and live oaks and all along<br \/>\nthe way ancient cypress, but we\u2019d play<br \/>\ndeep in the swamp, where Collins<br \/>\nbuilt his still, and made sweet peach<br \/>\nmoonshine; that is where we made stories<br \/>\nto cherish in our hearts, a place to reach<br \/>\nfor something warm, something to make<br \/>\na woman remember the blood rush<br \/>\nin the head, singing and doing the shake<br \/>\nand stump to the blues; there in the bush<br \/>\nwhere she was that pretty thing; her eyes<br \/>\nsoft with needing, her mouth full of lies.<\/p>\n<p>2<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we was country, but even a country<br \/>\ngirl knows the power of her coochie,<br \/>\nhow it could wake her without mercy<br \/>\nlate at night because of the sweet mystery<br \/>\nof a dream; because of the scent<br \/>\nof burning tobacco in the air, the taste<br \/>\nof man; country, but I learned<br \/>\nthe calming of liquor, how all haste<br \/>\nleaves the head, how big laughter<br \/>\ncan rise off the skin like mist at dawn.<br \/>\nCountry, but I was a fine believer<br \/>\nin the power of my waist-line, the bone-<br \/>\nshifting sweetness of nights of blue air,<br \/>\nthe juke joint where you let go all cares.<\/p>\n<p>3<br \/>\nBefore you man, I didn\u2019t join no church;<br \/>\nbefore you, man, Bessie Smith was my girl;<br \/>\nbefore you, man, used to wear my skirt<br \/>\nhitched up high around my thigh, used to twirl,<br \/>\nshow off my hairy legs, so men could think<br \/>\nof all that hair climbing up my thighs.<br \/>\nBefore you, I told God to just wink<br \/>\nfor a minute while I learned the soft sighs<br \/>\nof women; before you, man, there were<br \/>\nno fences, no gates, just a wide<br \/>\nroad; before you, I used to swear<br \/>\nlike a whore and dance, all wild<br \/>\nand loose; so don\u2019t think I have forgotten,<br \/>\ndespite my new self, this good holy Christian.<\/p>\n<p>4<\/p>\n<p>Before you, man, I traveled, Lord, I traveled.<br \/>\nEvery town from Mississippi to Pennsylvania<br \/>\nwas a shelter and I found a place to revel<br \/>\nin the freedom and glorious regalia<br \/>\nof a queen girl, wearing silk and satin<br \/>\nand shoes so pretty they became a drug.<br \/>\nBefore you, man, people called me \u201cPassion,\u201d<br \/>\nor \u201cFast Rose\u201d or \u201cMagdalene,\u201d who ain\u2019t any<br \/>\nbetter than any hard-dancing girl; I made men<br \/>\nweep for their mamas, made bad women<br \/>\nsoft so they wanted to call be \u201cbest friend<br \/>\nfor life, sweet sister,\u201d and be my mother hens.<br \/>\nBefore you, I could run, man, but now<br \/>\nyou have caused this fast girl to take it slow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2602 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/headshot-kwame-dawes-unnamed.jpg\" alt=\"headshot, kwame dawes, unnamed\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/headshot-kwame-dawes-unnamed.jpg 1188w, https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/headshot-kwame-dawes-unnamed-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/headshot-kwame-dawes-unnamed-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/headshot-kwame-dawes-unnamed-454x304.jpg 454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Kwame Dawes is the author of nineteen books of poetry and numerous other books\u00a0of fiction, criticism, and essays.
