Jealousy,<br \/>\na kind of locked-in syndrome.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBut in the waiting room where I lurk<br \/>\nfor Lasik of the soul,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI believe it\u2019s a miracle to have been<br \/>\ngiven a body at all.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLife is a celebration. By neon lights<br \/>\nand cellulite. We are not dead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tmnf-sc-hr\"><\/div>\n<p>STR8 GYM BUDDIES<\/p>\n<p><em>for Mark<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can smell them from here\u2014<br \/>\nthe alloyed bench press,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\niron beam and barbell, the grainy grip<br \/>\nof blister and callous.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt\u2019s sinful synesthesia,<br \/>\nthe hour spent in repetition and set,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nextending their core\u2014<br \/>\ncable raise, dead lift, upright row\u2014<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nfriction\u2019s copper wire<br \/>\ncoiled and uncoiled by lateral lunge thrust,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nuntil failure, until sore. What\u2019s voyeurism,<br \/>\nafter all, but a lesson in resistance?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nTo lower your face<br \/>\ninto that reddened strain of burden.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nOne more. Give me one more.<br \/>\nI could go on like this, too.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI love the language of cardiovascular desire,<br \/>\nlooking\u2019s syntax in its steeliness,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\ntethered by limits, wrought form.<br \/>\nThe threadbare cotton<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nof endurance spread over deltoids,<br \/>\npivoting breastbone.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBut if description\u2019s just encoded want,<br \/>\nwhy not decode the d\u00e9nouement?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThat muffled sigh of fatigue,<br \/>\nhis index fingers curled to guide<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe weight into its lock\u2014<br \/>\nthe way he slumps over, reveals the thin<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\ncrest of waist, between underwear<br \/>\nband and shirt,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nand I rest the brim of my feeling there,<br \/>\nacross the skin,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe tan line,<br \/>\nthe few blond sprouting hairs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/credit-Star-Black.jpg\" rel='prettyPhoto'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"credit Star Black\" src=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/credit-Star-Black.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"179\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Angelo Nikolopoulos is the author of Obscenely Yours, winner of the 2011 Kinereth Gensler Award from Alice James Books.
