This surging<\/p>\n<p>past pilgrim town and village well.<\/p>\n<p>This coin-thin vagina<\/p>\n<p>and acid stain of bone.<\/p>\n<p>This doctor with his rusty tools,<\/p>\n<p>this street cleaner, this mother<\/p>\n<p>laying down the bloody offerings<\/p>\n<p>of birth. This is not the cry<\/p>\n<p>of a beginning, or a river<\/p>\n<p>buried in the bowels of the earth.<\/p>\n<p>This is the sound of ten million girls<\/p>\n<p>singing of a time in the universe<\/p>\n<p>when they were born with tigers<\/p>\n<p>breathing between their thighs;<\/p>\n<p>when they set out for battle<\/p>\n<p>with all three eyes on fire,<\/p>\n<p>their golden breasts held high<\/p>\n<p>like weapons to the sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2262 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/nn-headshot-tishani-doshi_080311031447.jpg\" alt=\"nn, headshot, tishani-doshi_080311031447\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/nn-headshot-tishani-doshi_080311031447.jpg 200w, https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/nn-headshot-tishani-doshi_080311031447-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Tishani Doshi was born in the city formerly known as MADRAS in 1975.She has published five books of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Her essays, poems and short stories have been widely anthologized. In 2012 she represented India at a historic gathering of world poets for Poetry Parnassus at the Southbank Centre, London. She is also the recipient of an Eric Gregory Award for Poetry, winner of the All-India Poetry Competition, and her first book, COUNTRIES OF THE BODY, won the prestigious Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Tishani&#8217;s debut novel, THE PLEASURE SEEKERS, was shortlisted for the Hindu Literary Prize and long-listed for the Orange Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
