{"id":2208,"date":"2014-07-01T10:04:40","date_gmt":"2014-07-01T10:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=2208"},"modified":"2014-10-22T01:44:52","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T01:44:52","slug":"your-adolescent-dress-cut-off-just-above-the-knees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=2208","title":{"rendered":"your adolescent dress, cut off just above the knees &#8211; Gerburg Garmann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can, you realize, not say what you think,<br \/>\nand sometimes, not say what you have thought all along<br \/>\nin that operative fashion into which words have been put.<br \/>\nThough, such language seems far more real than the one<br \/>\nlumped in your throat, not uncomfortably lumped, mind you,<br \/>\nbut wound around itself, nevertheless, like a ball of vibrant red yarn<br \/>\nthe color of your adolescent dress, cut off just above the knees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paying attention to the ways a ball of red yarn unrolls itself<br \/>\nwhen you accidently drop it is not unlike the seductive shock<br \/>\nthe unraveling of your private language evokes as it un-lumps itself<br \/>\non your tongue, when invited. Rolling over your shoulder, your words<br \/>\nclutch his arm, enter her ear, and before you know it, they traverse<br \/>\nthe room and slide under the door to lock fingers with dew\u2019s translucency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This very moment, adolescent self-possession dispossesses<br \/>\nitself of all operational hems, bones, and orifices, and transfers<br \/>\nits indisputable vibrancy to the red poppies that defy<br \/>\ntheir melancholic bend for a few more days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>WHAT IF A TREE COULD CORRODE EXACTLY LIKE METAL?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What if a tree could corrode exactly like metal? If driftwood became the new history book,<br \/>\ntell of pasts dislodged we\u2019d otherwise never get to know?<\/p>\n<p>What if history were framed in one huge painting or film, chiseled into one single sculpture,<br \/>\nor expressed in one opera, one symphony, or one fugue, before our ears and eyes exploded?<\/p>\n<p>Do we prefer withering over blasts? Chairs over couches? Hands over feet? Skin over hair?<br \/>\nGray over rust? Contests with things over contests with our memories?<\/p>\n<p>In the best of all worlds we\u2019d have some rhubarb pie in a sky that holds a slanted piece of<br \/>\nold metal, some withering cardboard, a drifting pencil, and a great deal of clouds moving in<br \/>\nfugues.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Gerburg Garmann, a native of Germany, teaches German and French at the University of Indianapolis.
