{"id":191,"date":"2013-08-15T23:20:11","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T23:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=191"},"modified":"2014-01-16T21:52:02","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T21:52:02","slug":"pulaski-skyway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=191","title":{"rendered":"Pulaski Skyway &#8211; Paul Genega"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Low like the mean dream<br \/>\nof Newark the sky must<br \/>\nhave seemed to its builders.<br \/>\nRickety now, unhinging,<br \/>\nI fear I\u2019ll reach the end only<br \/>\nthanks to magic \u2013witch cauldrons<br \/>\nsoldered (eye of newt intact)<br \/>\nto forge this highway hubris.<br \/>\nFifty year old rock cackles<br \/>\non the radio, loud as<br \/>\nthe chemical sunrise, as the car<br \/>\nlifts over fetid pools of sludge.<br \/>\nBelow lies ballad country \u2013<br \/>\nswamps of sawed-up bodies,<br \/>\nSaturday night specials,<br \/>\npunks in concrete shoes \u2013<br \/>\nand I\u2019m stuck with flat prose,<br \/>\nthis gas-good, yawn-blue<br \/>\ncompact, predictable and dull.<br \/>\nA skyway wants a speedster,<br \/>\nwants a singer, wants a lover,<br \/>\nwants a souped-up chrome finned<br \/>\ncoup to ride the rising sky \u2013<br \/>\ncattails humming, steel grates<br \/>\nsinging shoop-shoop a capella<br \/>\ntrusses bleeding rust<br \/>\nfrom America\u2019s tied veins.<br \/>\n<div class=\"tmnf-sc-hr\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paul Genega&#8217;s most recent publications are ALL I CAN RECALL (Salmon Poetry, March, 2013) and the chapbook A STONE FOR NINA (December, 2012).
