I\u2019m from incense, from Calgon and
\ncassette tapes. I am from the window
\nof my teenage bedroom; screenless
\nthirteen floors above ground, full of
\nmystery, night and glittering lights.
\nI am from crabgrass in the concrete.
\nBreaking free; the jagged edges
\ncontrasting against the cracks. I\u2019m
\nfrom playing Spades while sending
\nthe kids to sleep so the adults could
\nparty. From Cousin Billy and Great
\nGrandma Flora. I\u2019m from expertly
\nhiding pain behind laughter while
\nmaking as few waves as possible.
\nFrom being too quiet and needing to
\ndefend myself. I\u2019m from church
\nservices that induced starvation;
\nfrom that toddlin\u2019 town and semi-
\nmysterious Cajun lineage. Smothered
\nchicken and black eyed peas. And
\nfrom the time I left my little brother
\nin the snow while going home from
\nschool in the blizzard of \u201879.<\/p>\n
