You have absorbed and adorned<br \/>\nrage from so many angles<br \/>\nfrom so many people of different pitches<br \/>\nbass to soprano<br \/>\nwho don\u2019t know<br \/>\nwomen,<br \/>\nwhat it\u2019s like<br \/>\nto live most of your life<br \/>\ndeprived of a clitoris.<br \/>\nThe deep betrayal<br \/>\ndown to the breath<br \/>\nof a beached wail in<br \/>\ndistress left in the wake<br \/>\nof a wave of your death,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMom. Where was the womanhood<br \/>\nsisterhood<br \/>\nyou so elegantly displayed<br \/>\nto your friends<br \/>\nwhen you were flesh?<br \/>\nWhere was that sacred bond<br \/>\nfor my sex, for me, your daughter?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nKali. Shakti. Devi.<br \/>\nShining One. Great Mother.<br \/>\nAm I a woman,<br \/>\nwith pieces taken?<br \/>\nKali, Feminine Force<br \/>\nCould I carry a child<br \/>\nand not hate my womb?<br \/>\nThis force that runs from the earth\u2019s core<br \/>\nto my root up through my vast mother land<br \/>\ncan I accept it<br \/>\nwithout using it against myself?<br \/>\nMy body?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThese are existential questions.<br \/>\nAt the core of society<br \/>\nwe are taught to hate ourselves, women,<br \/>\nprotecting our cave fertilized, unfertilized<br \/>\nwhile doused in rage, enraged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\">\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n(previously published in <em>Beyond Words Magazine<\/em>)<\/p>\n<pre class=\"moz-quote-pre\"><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n________________________________________<br \/>\n<strong>RECLAIM LAUGHING<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMy humor is hard to access.<br \/>\nIt must be some kind of<br \/>\nroom it hides in<br \/>\nuntil I have nothing<br \/>\nand then it emerges to say<br \/>\nsee? Things are still<br \/>\nworth laughing about<br \/>\nmy laugh reveals<br \/>\nlife as a finite<br \/>\ngift a mortal joke<br \/>\nand I remember that God<br \/>\ndoesn\u2019t want us to suffer<br \/>\nthat we\u2019re put here,<br \/>\nall of us, with our own<br \/>\npurpose we learn<br \/>\nour strengths our<br \/>\nweaknesses learn to make<br \/>\nthem our strengths<br \/>\nI\u2019m sensitive,<br \/>\nand that\u2019s positive<br \/>\nand I\u2019m careful<br \/>\nwith my words and I<br \/>\nlove that about myself<br \/>\nand I shouldn\u2019t<br \/>\nhate<br \/>\nwhat I love about myself<br \/>\nand I realize humor is one<br \/>\nof my strengths, it\u2019s been<br \/>\nused against me, laughing<br \/>\nI\u2019ve experienced<br \/>\nthe worst of schadenfreude<br \/>\nfrom kin<br \/>\nand it\u2019s time to reclaim<br \/>\nlaughing time to<br \/>\nlaugh time to create<br \/>\na legacy of laughter<br \/>\nto smile at nothing<br \/>\nthe whimsy of the clouds<br \/>\nand not feel stupid that laughing<br \/>\nis a gift and<br \/>\ngratitude lifts<br \/>\nand not trust fall<br \/>\ninto that familiar plaster smile<br \/>\nthat hides a peculiar kind<br \/>\nof depression<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-13312\" src=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/nn-Taneeshphoto_1a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/nn-Taneeshphoto_1a.jpg 319w, https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/nn-Taneeshphoto_1a-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/>Taneesh Kaur is a teaching artist of East Indian descent, based in the Bay Area. She is a social justice advocate whose first love is poetry, and uses nature to understand and dismantle systems of mental and physical oppression.
