Fig yields cypress.\n \nIt became a kind of therapy session.\nShe was in bed. Netting\n \nkept the mosquitoes from her\nthighs. As she slept, discovery made\n \nits way in like another snake from the landscape.\nShe woke to a mercy that came in the form of a fish.\n \nAnd they ate and were made aware of the beauty\nof the animals. This, at least, is how I learned it.\n \nIsn\u2019t God a centuries-old sign of wanting,\nthe swollen remnant of rest?\n \nIsn\u2019t guilt the smallness of our bodies\nagainst open space?\n \nAren\u2019t you the welcome blackness\nthat swallows me whole?\n \nIssam Zineh (he\/him) is a Los Angeles-born, Palestinian-American poet and scientist.
