Insects have transformed into
\na graveyard the windshield of
\n 
\nmy Indian Scout. My brother
\nrumbles down the engine of his
\n 
\nChief, pulls off his gloves, loads
\nthe camera & silently snaps
\n 
\na photo of a Lake Michigan
\nblue sky big as God\u2019s hands.
\n 
\nThe photos of his buddies
\nshow them sober, a little bit
\n 
\ngreen a little bit yellow, waiting
\nto be shipped out, waiting
\n 
\nwhile a train prepares for
\ndeparture, waiting for
\n 
\ntheir futures to arrive,
\ntheir shadows detached from
\n 
\ntheir bodies, strewn across
\nthe ground ahead of them.
\n 
\nServed my country
\nhe said to me. Now
\nI want to see it.
\nNever discussed his plans
\n 
\nwith dad during supper
\nor mom over morning
\n 
\ncoffee, never talked
\nexcept to say it\u2019s a sin
\n 
\nto commit murder. We avoided
\nthe speed traps in Minnesota
\n 
\nNorth Dakota towns, landscapes
\nbleached yellow by goggles, hills
\n
