{"id":12382,"date":"2022-09-23T01:38:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T01:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=12382"},"modified":"2022-09-23T18:16:10","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T18:16:10","slug":"two-poems-michael-brosnan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=12382","title":{"rendered":"TWO POEMS &#8211; Michael Brosnan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BY THE FERRY LANDING <\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Clouds gather, an angry mob,<br>then silently scatter, no rain.<br>Some days you\u2019ve just got to believe<br>there is no grand plan.<br>We have found each other by chance,<br>and by chance we spy a great egret<br>in the marsh by the ferry landing.<br>Ever so slowly, it stretches its neck<br>over the water, poised for the strike.<br>It\u2019s a marvel, what they\u2019ve become \u2014<br>part sedge, part wind, part spear \u2014<br>evolving from a relentless desire<br>to join sea and sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n&nbsp;\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>ICE TO ICE<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, this far north,<br>there comes a day in late September<br>when, floating on your back in the pond,<br>staring into the illusory blue of sky and desire,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>catching out of the corner of your eye<br>the leaves quitting to yellow and red,<br>ready to let loose, fully spent, you know<br>it\u2019s your last swim for the year.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The earth exhales its evening breath,<br>whispers the need to rest<br>in its long, uneasy dialogue<br>with the unfathomable.<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Even back in the expanse of summer,<br>the water held this promise, flowing<br>in those ribbons of cold current,<br>resisting the sun\u2019s will, reminding you<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>that, in no time at all, you\u2019ll huddle<br>again by the woodstove, the kitchen light,<br>long for the arrival of company and the refuge<br>of company\u2019s grace. Though on occasion,<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>when the indoor world turns tired and dry,<br>you\u2019ll slip outside, without a word,<br>and lace your skates beneath a bright moon,<br>thrill to the warp and crack of ice,<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>the groans of the great shifting land,<br>and glide off on quick blades,<br>lean anyway you please,<br>scripting resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Michael Brosnan lives in Exeter, New Hampshire.
