{"id":11508,"date":"2021-01-10T20:45:43","date_gmt":"2021-01-10T20:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=11508"},"modified":"2021-01-11T01:48:56","modified_gmt":"2021-01-11T01:48:56","slug":"two-poems-schyler-butler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/narrativenortheast.com\/?p=11508","title":{"rendered":"TWO POEMS &#8211; Schyler Butler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LISTEN<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nFirst he&#8217;ll gift me nights tied<br \/>\nwith cheap Merlot ribbons<br \/>\nfrayed beneath crescent moons<br \/>\nthen introduce me to the art<br \/>\nof whistling, instruct me<br \/>\nto pucker less before blowing,<br \/>\nmy lips dry bolti unable<br \/>\nto remember water, the song<br \/>\nthat erupts a lost cantata<br \/>\nonly he can access.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhen he plucks the sun<br \/>\ninto bloom between latescent<br \/>\nfingers, my mouth remains<br \/>\nunable to match the euphoria<br \/>\ndancing on each temple.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nSo when he stayed outside<br \/>\nmy front door for five hours<br \/>\nafter the first time his fist<br \/>\ntwirled against the backdrop<br \/>\nof my brown flesh, whistling<br \/>\nlike a jagged chime scraping<br \/>\nvinyl hall, I was not surprised,<br \/>\nprayed in a locked bathroom<br \/>\nfor silence, clasped hands so hard<br \/>\nthe blood should&#8217;ve burst.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>TWENTY SOMETHING<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nRolling down Fry St. on your mountain bike<br \/>\nlike a Prime Minister abandoning Parliament,<br \/>\nhands loose on the handlebars and a customary<br \/>\ncigarette lopped between a grin, you reigned.<br \/>\nAll the girls saw; all the middle-aged professors<br \/>\nand store owners reminisced.
